Metal casting, also known as metal fabrication, is the process by which liquid metal is poured into a mold where it will begin to cool down and take the shape of the mold. Modern-day living is full of special metal products, such as cars, lamp posts, and handheld tools, which all need to be molded through metal casting. Many foundries offer metal casting services that include casting complex metal units that require minimal labor as well as recycling services by taking unused scrap metal to melt down and create something new.
The Molds Used
Perhaps the most important aspect of metal casting would be the use of a mold. Most metal casting services use two different types of molds: Reusable and non-reusable. A reusable mold is generally made of metal and does not break down during the casting process. Non-reusable molds is a casting process, also known as sand casting, where the sand is shaped into a supporting material where the metal is eventually poured in and allowed to cool and take the shape of the mold.
There are various types of metal used in the metal casting process and most, if not all, metal casting services are familiar with the different types of metals involved in metal casting. The metals used can be split into two categories: Ferrous and non-ferrous. Ferrous metals, such as carbon steel and stainless steel, contain iron. Non-ferrous metals, such as nickel or aluminum, do not contain iron.
End of a Cycle
Once the metals are placed into the furnace, often exceeding 2500°F, the metals are cast into their molds and allowed to cool. Depending on the future use of the casting, it may go through important heat treatments so that the casting go be used in extreme situations without failure. Once a casting has passed through any additional treatment and inspection, it will be sold to either corporations or consumers. Once a casting nears the end of its service life, the entire metal casting process cycles again.
